11/11/2016 2:37:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team picked up a 74-60 victory over Savannah State in the regular season opener on Friday morning. The Hall's starting backcourt of JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) and LaTecia "TT" Smith (Gardenia, Calif.) combined for 37 points to power the Pirates.
The Pirates led from wire-to-wire in the triumph, going up by 13 at the break and as many as 17 late in the fourth quarter. Jackson led all scorers with 21 points, while Smith added five rebounds and five steals to a 16-point outing. Seven different Pirates scored at least five points in the contest including four of The Hall's seven freshmen that saw action.
Head Coach Anthony Bozzella on the Result
"I was really pleased with how our young group played, often times with three or four freshmen on the floor and no seniors. Defensively we were excellent, generating steals and that's something we will need to do all season."
Turning Point
After a sluggish start offensively, The Hall used a strong end to the first quarter to turn a 13-12 deficit into a 19-14 advantage heading to the second frame. Overall it would a 15-6 run that bled into the second quarter, capped by a Jackson lay-in with 6:00 remaining in the first half that pushed the lead to 28-19. The Pirates would push their advantage to double-digits for the first time at the end of the second quarter, with freshmen Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) and Deja Winters (Richmond Heights, Ohio) combining for the final five points of the first half to make it 43-29 at the break.
