PANAMA CITY -- Seton Hall rising junior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina) helped lead the Dominican Republic National Team to the Bronze Medal of the 2016 Centrobasket Championship over the weekend.
Delgado was a frontcourt force for the Dominicans in the event's six games, averaging 12.5 points per game, 10th best in the tournament, and 7.5 rebounds per contest, sixth-best overall.
Delgado helped lead his country to perfect 4-0 record during group play, winning Group B by one point over the defending champions, Mexico. After solid games against Costa Rica and the Bahamas to begin the event, Delgado took his game to another level in game three. The Pirates' center scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds in only 23 minutes vs. Mexico. He followed that effort with his best of the tournament, a 21-point, 12-rebound outburst against the Virgin Islands to close group play.
The Dominican Republic fell to Puerto Rico in the semifinals, 74-69, on Friday for their only loss of the event. Delgado finished with 11 points and six rebounds in the close setback. However, the team bounced back to rout Panama, 64-48, in the Bronze Medal game on Saturday. Delgado recorded nine points and seven rebounds in the Centrobasket finale.
Puerto Rico claimed the 2016 Centrobasket title with a one-point victory over Mexico in the Gold Medal game.
