NEW YORK - After starting the game an incredible 10-for-10 on field goal attempts, including 5-for-5 from three-point range, and finishing the game with a game-high 25 points, junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. In addition, junior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for a fifth consecutive week.
Rodriguez is Seton Hall's 35th all-time BIG EAST Player of the Week selection and the first since Isaiah Whitehead on Feb. 29, 2016. The talented wing had a first half for the ages last Saturday against DePaul, going 9-for-9 from the field and 5-for-5 from three-point range for a total of 23 points in the game's first 20 minutes. He then made his first shot of the second half to become the first Pirate since Brian Laing in 2007 to make at least 10 consecutive field goal attempts in a game.
Rodriguez finished the day with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting, four assists, three rebounds and a blocked shot. He is averaging 15.5 points per game this season, 13th best in the BIG EAST Conference, and so far through three conference games is shooting 63.2 percent from behind the arc.
Delgado continues his surge as the best big man in the BIG EAST after recording his ninth consecutive double-double in the DePaul victory. He finished with 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting and collected 12 rebounds, including three offensive rebounds that he converted into six second chance points.
Delgado is now averaging 17.0 points and 12.7 rebounds during his stretch of nine consecutive double-doubles. Overall for the season, he is averaging 14.9 points and a conference-best 11.7 rebounds per game, which is also good for sixth-best in the country.
Rodriguez, Delgado and the Pirates are 12-3 through 15 games of the season, including a 2-1 mark in the BIG EAST. The team is top-50 in the Kenpom and RPI ratings and is on the cusp of the Associated Press top 25 poll. The Hall heads out on a three-road-games-in-six-days expedition beginning Wednesday at Marquette at 7 p.m., Eastern, live on FS1 and AM970 The Answer.
