SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team (1-0) forced 33 turnovers in a dominant defensive effort to pick up a 91-49 victory over Saint Peter's (0-1) in season-opening action on Friday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates finished with 21 steals in the triumph, most in a game since 1993. JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) scored her 1,000th career point (431 at Seton Hall) in the first quarter of the contest.
In her first game as a Pirate, Donnaizha Fountain (Roxbury, Mass.) led four players in double-figures with 22 points and added six rebounds in only 15 minutes of action. The Pirates overcame a slow shooting start and built a 15-point lead at the half, swelling to as many as 44 midway through the fourth quarter. Taylor Brown (Paterson, N.J.) also shined in her Pirate debut with 14 points and six rebounds while freshman Selena Philoxy (Queens, N.Y.) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Head Coach Anthony Bozzella on the Result:
"I really liked our defensive intensity throughout the contest. We did not shoot the ball well and I think we came out a little nervous, but we were able to turn defense into offense which was a huge boost. I loved the energy and the selflessness of our veterans."
