SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Donnaizha Fountain (Roxbury, Mass.) had a huge day to lead the Seton Hall women's basketball team (9-6, 1-3 BIG EAST) to its first conference victory with a 65-56 triumph over Providence (8-8, 1-3 BIG EAST) on Friday night at Walsh Gymnasium. Fountain led all players with 20 points and 12 rebounds in the win, scoring the 1,000th point of her career in the process.
The win for The Hall snapped a three-game skid to open conference play and saw the Pirates improve to 7-3 in the friendly confines of Walsh Gymnasium. Joining Fountain in double-figures was JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) with 15 points, while Inja Butina (Zagreb, Croatia) added eight points and five assists. For the Friars, Chanell Williams had team-highs of 16 points and six rebounds.
Turning Points
The Hall led by three after a quarter, but used a big 13-2 run early in the second quarter to stretch their lead out to 15. Jackson got the run started with a 3-pointer at 6:34 of the frame before triples followed from Nicole Jimenez (Miami, Fla.) and Fountain. Taylor Brown (Paterson, N.J.) capped the run with a jumper in the paint that made it 31-16 at the 3:08 mark of the quarter.
The big second quarter helped The Hall take a double-digit lead to the break, but Providence clawed back and chipped the lead down to 59-52 with 2:04 to go in the fourth quarter. Needing a clutch late bucket, the Pirates went to Fountain for a turnaround jumper with 1:42 to play to go back up nine and effectively ice the contest.
