Turning Point
Seton Hall led the entire game, but NC State kept things tight for most of the contest. Mid second half the Wolfpack got the deficit down to three. But the Pirates buckled down on defense and took advantage of major NC State foul trouble. After Carrington hit a pair of free throws with 7:58 left in the game to go up five, the Pirates forced a turnover and got a layup from Powell to go up seven. The Hall got a turnover and two stops on defense while Powell reclaimed the double-digit lead with a layup at 5:53 to go to make it 77-66.
NC State could only get within six from there as the fouls started to pile up, and the Pirates did their job at the free throw line. They were 17-for-20 at the line in the final eight minutes. With a seven-point lead and 2:57 on the clock, the Pirates were able to chew up almost a minute of clock by grabbing three offensive rebounds.
Rodriguez punctuated the win when Carrington stole the ball with under 30 seconds left and he hit a wide open layup to the delight of the diehard Pirates fans in attendance.
Inside the Numbers
- Seton hall shot 48.3 percent for the game (28-for-58), 33.3 percent from three (7-for-21) and 79.5 percent (31-for-39) at the free throw line. The 31 made free throws are a season high, easily exceeding the 25 they made at Butler back in January, and they are a new NCAA Tournament program high, surpassing the 30 Seton Hall hit against Missouri in 1992.
- NC State shot 45.9 percent for the game (28-for-61), 36.7 percent from three (11-for-30) and 59.3 percent at the charity stripe (16-for-27).
- The Pirates out-rebounded NC State, 40-34, and used 11 offensive rebounds to generate 13 points.
- The Hall only turned the ball over seven times while they forced 10 NC State turnovers that turned into 14 Pirates points.
- Carrington scored 26 points to lead the Pirates. He was 6-for-14 from the field, 3-for-5 from three and 11-for-13 at the free throw line. The 11 free throws made are a season high and tied Seton Hall's NCAA Tournament record, also held by Terry Dehere vs. Western Kentucky in 1993. He added four rebounds, three assists and two steals. It was his 27th career 20-point game and ninth of the season, including his fifth in the last six games.Â
- Rodriguez notched his 23rd career 20-point game and 12th of the season with his 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting.Â
- Sanogo delivered his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He added a block and two steals.
- Powell generated 19 points, mostly at the free throw line, going 10-for-12, both career highs. He also grabbed nine rebounds.
- Delgado had 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
- This is Seton Hall's first NCAA Tournament win since 2004, snapping a four-game losing streak in March Madness. The Pirates are now 16-11 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. It's also Seton Hall's third win as a No. 8 seed; the Pirates beat UTEP in 1988 and Arizona in 2004.
- The Hall is now 2-2 all-time against the ACC in the NCAA Tournament. The Pirates also evened the all-time series with NC State at 3-3.
- Seton Hall's 94 points is the second most the program has scored in an NCAA Tournament game; the Pirates had 95 in the National Semifinals against Duke.
- The victory was head coach Kevin Willard's 150th at Seton Hall. He is 150-113 with the Pirates and 195-162 overall.
- Of the 21 Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association schools, this is the first NCAA Tournament win in the round of 64 since Seton Hall and Manhattan won in 2004 (Disclaimer: Monmouth won a play-in game in 2006 back when there were 65 tournament teams).
- Seton Hall is now 11-2 all-time when it is the higher seed in the NCAA Tournament.
- The Pirates are now 64-7 in their last 71 games when holding a seven-point lead or larger at any juncture of the contest.
- The Hall is also now 38-14 all-time and 11-1 this season when Carrington makes at least two three-pointers.
- The team is also 18-4 this season when it shoots more free throw attempts than its opponent and 14-3 when scoring at least 80 points.
- Since the creation of NCAA Divisions in 1973, Delgado is now 8th in NCAA Div. I career rebounds with 1,432.
- Rodriguez surpassed Fuquan Edwin (2010-14) and is now tied with Nick Galis (1975-79) for 12th all-time in Seton Hall scoring history. He has 1,651 points.
- Delgado surpassed Eugene Harvey (2006-10) for 17th all-time in Seton Hall scoring history with 1,569 points.
