SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. Women’s soccer defeated the Providence Friars 2-0 in a BIG EAST match-up in Rhode Island Friday afternoon. With the win, the Pirates improved to 6-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in BIG EAST play.
Seton Hall netted their first goal in the 36th minute when Maeve O'Donnell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) took a shot from the top of the goaltender’s box to beat Friars goalkeeper Laura Elfers. Madelaene Kill (Marietta, Ga) tallied the second goal for the Pirates in the 89th minute after taking a pass from Cassie Gioia (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.). For each O’Donnell and Kill it was their first goals of the season, as well as Gioia first assist.
Amanda Becker (Aston, Pa) picked up her fifth shutout of the season en route to her sixth victory making six saves on 13 shots. She kept the game scoreless in the 24th minute when she made one save on Kelley Pettersen before Pettersen regained possession to take another shot that had to be blocked aside.
Elfers made five saves on 14 shots. Providence finished the game ahead in corner kicks 6-1 and fouls 12-6.
The Pirates will travel to Connecticut to take on the Huskies Sunday afternoon. The BIG EAST match will kick off at 1:00 pm.
