CHAPEL HILL, N.C.The Seton Hall baseball team fell to No. 4 North Carolina, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The Pirates fall to 0-2 with the loss while UNC improves to 2-0. The Pirates were led by Greg Miller, who tallied two hits.
Seton Hall sophomore Corey Young (Shrewsbury, N.J.) held the Tar Heels scoreless through five innings, but UNC scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back singles by Seth Williams and Josh Horton and a walk to Reid Fronk loaded the bases before Tim Federowicz drove in the go-ahead run with a single through the left side. One out later, Kyle Seager singled up the middle for his second hit of the day and a three-run cushion.
The Pirates threatened to score in the seventh inning, when Robbie Hine (Brick, N.J.) drew a walk and Greg Miller (Shamong, N.J.) singled to move Hine to second. Chris Affinito (East Brunswick, N.J.) put down a sacrifice bunt to move Hine and Miller to second and third, but the Pirates couldn’t capitalize and the inning ended with a strikeout and a groundout.
Seton Hall rallied late in the game, scoring two runs in the ninth inning. Miller led off the inning with a walk, and Casey Hines (West Milford, N.J.) singled through the right side. With two outs, Mike Young (Shrewsbury, N.J.) hit a double to shallow center field, scoring Miller and Hines. However, a ground-out ended the inning and the Pirates fell, 3-2.
UNC freshman Alex White pitched six scoreless innings for the win, while Corey Young was credited with the loss.
The Pirates and the Tar Heels will face off at 1:30 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three game series.
