PISCATAWAY, N.J. Fifth-ranked Rutgers knocked off the Seton Hall women’s basketball team, 69-47, on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates (11-3, 2-1) saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end, while the Scarlet Knights (13-2, 3-0) have now won eight straight.
Junior Jadis Rhodin (Lakehurst, N.J.) led SHU with 17 points, while senior Amber Harris (Washington, Pa.) chipped in with 10. Junior Noteisha Womack (Washington, D.C.) registered eight points and nine rebounds.
Matee Ajavon led four Scarlet Knights in double-figures with 21 points.
Rutgers seized control immediately, jumping out to a 9-0 lead in just over two minutes after a Heather Zurich jumper. The Pirates struggled to find any offensive rhythm and found themselves trailing 23-4 with 10:34 left in the first half. SHU twice cut the lead to 14 before heading into the break down 33-17.
The Scarlet Knights remained steady early in the second half, taking a 41-23 lead on a basket by Epiphanny Prince. The Hall began to chip away, however, and Harris sank a jumpshot with 9:56 remaining that cut the deficit to 47-36 and capped a 13-6 run.
Rutgers responded with the next seven points to regain control, and Seton Hall could not put together a final charge. The Scarlet Knights closed the game on a 22-11 spurt as they remained perfect in BIG EAST play.
The Pirates shot just 36.8% on the day and allowed Rutgers to sink 50.9% of its attempts. The Scarlet Knights also enjoyed a 38-25 advantage on the glass and a 13-4 edge in second chance points.
Seton Hall is back in action on Tuesday as it closes out its non-conference schedule at home against Pennsylvania at 7:00 p.m.
