SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall University head women's basketball coach Anthony Bozzella on Monday announced transfer front court player Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) has been granted a waiver from the NCAA to compete immediately for the Pirates and she will be eligible for the 2014-15 season.
Gordon, who started her career at West Virginia University and suited up last season for the Mountaineers, is from Mount Vernon, N.Y., and transferred to Seton Hall this summer in order to be closer to home.
"I am very happy the NCAA granted Lubirdia's request to play immediately," said Bozzella. "She is a great addition to our program in that she is a bona fide low-post threat and has the ability to play at a high level against the top post players in our league."
Last season at West Virginia, Gordon appeared in 14 games for the Mountaineers, averaging 2.0 points per game while shooting 68.8 percent (11-for-16) from the field.
Coming out of Mount Vernon High School, Gordon was ranked as the No. 11 center in the country according to ESPNU HoopGurlz and the No. 60 overall prospect by Dan Olson.
She scored 781 points with 690 rebounds and 170 blocks during her prep career, leading to All-Section and Third-Team All-State accolades. During her junior season at Mount Vernon, she averaged a double-double with 13.5 points, 11.9 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per contest.
The Seton Hall women's basketball team will take the court for its first game action of the season when it hosts Philadelphia University in an exhibition contest this Saturday, Nov. 8, in Walsh Gymnasium at 12 p.m.
The 2014-15 season officially tips off next Friday, Nov. 14, when the Pirates host Rider University in the first round of the Preseason WNIT. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
