SHU Hosts 22nd Annual NGWSD Luncheon on Sunday

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall University will host the 22nd annual New Jersey National Girls and Women in Sports Day awards luncheon on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Richard Regan Athletics and Recreation Center on the university's campus. The luncheon will be held in the Richard and Sheila Regan Field House at 12 p.m., prior to the Seton Hall vs. Villanova women's basketball game at 2:00 p.m. in Walsh Gymnasium.
The 28th anniversary of National Girls and Women in Sport Day (NGWSD) was officially recognized on Feb. 5th, 2014. NGWSD celebrates the athletic achievements of women and the positive well-being associated with sports participation while also recognizing the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports. Chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1986, NGWSD is honored in all 50 states. This year's theme is, "Blazing the Trail, Passing the Torch."
At the luncheon, two Honor Award winners will be recognized for their outstanding achievements in athletics and contributions to women's sports in New Jersey, Val Ackerman, Commissioner of the Big East Conference who has been an advocate for women in sports for the past thirty years and Deanna Knobloch, who in her 22-year tenure as Head Women's Lacrosse Coach at Moorestown High School, has won 17-state titles and holds a 450-29-4 record. The Outstanding Athlete Awards will also be presented to one individual from each high school, junior college, and college in attendance.
At halftime of the basketball game, the NJAIAW will present "Woman of the Year" awards to one outstanding athlete from each college and university in the state. The awards are based upon athletic excellence, academic success and community service.
Participating organizations this year include the Garden State Athletic Conference, the New Jersey Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the New Jersey Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, the New Jersey Athletic Conference, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, Seton Hall University, and the Women's Sports Foundation.
Approximately 150 student-athletes from New Jersey's high schools, colleges and universities will be honored at the celebration. One of the largest events in the state to recognize women's athletics, approximately 800 people are expected to attend the festivities.
