INDIANAPOLIS - Six Seton Hall University Athletics varsity programs have received public recognition from the NCAA for posting a multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) in top 10 percent of their respective sports, the NCAA announced Wednesday as part of its NCAA Div. I Academic Performance Program. Seton Hall's baseball, men's cross country, women's cross country men's golf, women's golf and women's swimming & diving programs all received the honor. The six awards match the department's record that was previously reached in 2015 and 2016.
For women's golf, this is the sixth consecutive year that the program has achieved public recognition status, an outstanding accomplishment considering it has only been in existence for eight years. This is the fifth straight public recognition for the baseball team. Women's cross country has now earned four consecutive public recognitions, and the men's cross country is up to two straight. Men's golf earned its first recognition since 2013 and its sixth overall. Women's swimming & diving earned its first-ever recognition.Â
Baseball was one of only 31 Div. I teams and women's swimming & diving was one of only 34 Div. I teams to be recognized in its respective sport.
"Congratulations to our six programs that received public recognition awards this week, demonstrating that they are among the nation's best in academic performance," Seton Hall Vice President and Director of Athletics & Recreation Patrick Lyons said. "We always strive to position our student-athletes to succeed in the classroom, earn their undergraduate degree and be ready for the postgraduate world, and it is appreciative when the NCAA recognizes programs who are among the best of the best. Congratulations again to all our student-athletes, coaches and administrators who worked hard for this recognition."
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
"I applaud every program earning a Public Recognition Award this year for their commitment to going above and beyond to prepare students for life after college through academic achievement," NCAA President Mark Emmert said.
Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 23. APRs released this year will be based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
A leader among its peers in academic success, Seton Hall's excellence in the classroom is evidenced by the department's commitment to resources and the student-athletes' commitment to placing a high value on their education. Seton Hall supports its student-athletes with outstanding mentoring and tutoring, led by the Academic Support Services staff, and offers its student-athletes a state-of-the-art learning environment in the Charles W. Doehler Academic Center for Excellence, which was built just over four years ago and offers a main study area, group meeting spaces and private tutoring rooms.
The Pirates have responded with incredible cumulative grades. After the Fall 2017 semester, Seton Hall student-athletes had a 3.378 grade-point average, and 135 student-athletes made the Seton Hall Dean's List.
