NEW YORK - Four Seton Hall men's basketball stars have earned 2017-18 All-Met Writers awards after outstanding seasons, the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association announced Monday. Seniors Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic), Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) and Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) were all named All-Met and will be honored at the annual awards dinner Wednesday night at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, N.Y.
Since 1981, this is the ninth time that Seton Hall has garnered at least four All-Met selections as Delgado and Rodriguez were named to the first team and Carrington and Powell were selected to the second team.Â
Delgado, who is now a three-time All-Met Writers honoree (two-time first-teamer), the 2017 Haggerty Award winner and the 2015 Co-Rookie of the Year, was once again the best big man in the BIG EAST Conference, winning the league's rebounding championship for the third time in four years, becoming only the second player in conference history to be a three-time rebounding champion (Michael Smith, Providence, 1992-94). No BIG EAST student-athlete came within 90 total rebounds of Delgado this past season, and in conference games, no one came within 50 of him as he pulled down 214 in 18 games (11.9 RPG). Overall, he averaged 13.6 points and 11.8 rebounds on the season, giving him a season average double-double for the second straight year. He had 22 double-doubles in 2017-18, which ranked third in the nation. He also finished fourth in the country in overall rebounding and sixth in offensive rebounding (4.03).
Delgado's other honors in 2017-18 included winning the prestigious Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award as well as second-team All-BIG EAST and All-District from both the NABC and USBWA.
Rodriguez, who is now a three-time All-Met Writers selection, earns first-team honors for the first time in his career. He was a dominant scorer for the Pirates, leading the team at 17.5 points per game, which ranked 10th in the BIG EAST Conference. He scored 20 or more points 12 times on the season, the most of any Pirate, and he had scored 20 or more in five consecutive games from Feb. 4 to Feb. 18 until an injury in the first half at Providence forced him out of the game. He was the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Dec. 4 after averaging 26.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in Seton Hall's pair of wins over nationally ranked teams, No. 22 Texas Tech and No. 17 Louisville, at which he hit the game-winning shot.
Rodriguez's other 2017-18 honors included second-team All-BIG EASTÂ and All-District from both the NABC and USBWA.
Carrington is also now a three-time All-Met honoree, and it is the second time he's been named to the second team. He was the catalyst for Seton Hall's late-season run to the NCAA Tournament, scoring an average of 23.7 points over the final seven games of his career in leading the Pirates to the program's first tournament win since 2004. He was the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Feb. 26 after averaging 23.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in two critical road victories at Providence and St. John's. He finished the season averaging 15.6 points, 14th highest in the BIG EAST, and 4.4 assists, 8th-best in the BIG EAST.
One of the most talented shooters in the country, Powell earns his first All-Met honor and it comes on the heels of being named the 2018 BIG EAST Most Improved Player of the Year. He averaged 15.5 points per game, good for 15th in the BIG EAST, and averaged 2.8 three-pointers made per game, which was fifth-best in the conference. He increased his scoring average by nearly five points from his freshman season and increased his shooting by four percent. His most drastic improvement might be his passing as he increased his assists by 300 percent from last season, going from 29 to 94. Just over the last five games of the regular season, he compiled 25 assists (5.0 APG), and he finished the year with a 1.38 assist/turnover ratio.
