John D. “Honey” Russell

John Russell was not only a brilliant and successful player, but also was equally successful as a coach. During his coaching career at Seton Hall, the former Boston Celtics great guided the Pirates to 294 victories, the most in school history. His greatest team was the 1952–53 squad, which won the NIT Championship and was ranked number one in the nation for six weeks. He was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a pro player and to the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame as a college coach.
