Julius Nicolai played baseball and basketball at Seton Hall from 1955–58 and was the battery mate of longtime Pirate head coach and former catcher Mike Sheppard. Nicolai’s best season came in 1957 when he went 5-1 with a 0.83 ERA, ranking him eighth in the nation. As an alumnus, he created the Julius A. Nicolai Endowed Fund for Baseball which provides financial support for the Seton Hall baseball program.
