Mike Costigan's career at Seton Hall began in impressive fashion, when as a freshman in 1996 he became the first golfer in school history to capture the BIG EAST Championship. With Costigan on the squad, Seton Hall qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championship in 1998 and 1999, and recorded a program-record 17th place finish in ’99 when Costigan placed 53rd overall. The Pirates won a program-record seven tournaments during the 1998–99 season, with Costigan firing a personal-best 73.73 scoring average that fall. His four-under par 140 at the James Madison Invitational in 1998 ranked as the second-lowest par-72, two-round score in school history, and the 67 he shot at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational in 1998 ranked as the program’s lowest single round on a par-72.
