President of Seton Hall from 1959-69, Bishop John Dougherty embraced the belief that athletics were of immeasurable value in contributing to the educational process of Seton Hall students. Not without athletic prowess himself, he was a member of the football and baseball teams while at Seton Hall and also played semi-pro football in 1928. A priest for almost 45 years, he was ordained in Rome on July 23, 1933 and consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of Newark on January 21, 1963.
