- 1974
Father James Carey attended St. Benedict’s Prep and Seton Hall, prior to his ordination on June 6, 1936, by Archbishop Thomas Walsh. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed to the Seton Hall faculty, serving in the capacity of Assistant Director of Athletics. He enjoyed a distinguished and colorful record as an Army Chaplain in three theaters of operation during World War II. He also won the Bronze Star for Heroism and became Chief of Chaplains of the XXIVth Corps. After the war, he returned to Seton Hall and was named Director of Athletics. In this capacity, he became known as a dynamic and imaginative administrator who led SHU to national prominence in many intercollegiate sports during the 1940–50s.
