Walter J. Dukes, Jr.
- Induction:
- 1973
Walter Dukes, whose number five is retired at Seton Hall, is one of basketball’s all-time greats. As a senior in 1952–53, he led the Pirates to the NIT Championship and a 31-2 record, spending six weeks as the No. 1 team in the country. He set the NCAA all-time record for most rebounds in a season with 734, a record that still stands. He was a consensus All-American and the recipient of the Haggerty Award as the Metropolitan area’s most outstanding player. At the time of his induction, he held the single-game and career rebounding records and his 1,789 points ranked him second on the school’s all-time scoring list. After Seton Hall, Dukes joined the Harlem Globetrotters and then went to the NBA where he was a three-time All-Pro and two-time All-Star.
