SPORTS ROUNDUP
The men's soccer team posted a record of 0-1-1 last week as it tied Pittsburgh, 3-3, and lost to Notre Dame, 2-0. The Pirates finished with week with a record of 8-3-3, overall and 4-3-2 in BIG EAST matches.
On Friday (Oct. 16), junior Peter Scavo (Raritan, NJ) scored at 78:19 on a feed from freshman Brian Ruth (Oakdale, NY) to help #13 Seton Hall to a 3-3 tie with Pittsburgh. The Pirates took a 2-1 lead at the half, but back-to-back goals by the Panthers put Seton Hall at a 3-2 deficit. Freshman Gregory Strohmann (Weirheim, Germany) scored to open the match at 20:50, knocking home a feed from sophomore Brian Cuddy (North Brunswick, NJ). After a Panther goal knotted the match at 1-1, Cuddy scored at the 41:11 mark on a feed from junior A.J. Panas (Budd Lake, NJ). Pittsburgh rallied back with two goals and Scavo closed out the scoring with his 10th goal of the season. Senior Derek Martin (St. Louis, MO) made three saves in net for the Pirates. Seton Hall outshot the Panthers 23-15 and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
On Sunday (Oct. 18) Notre Dame's Andrew Artis scored two goals and Greg Vehlo turned away five shots to lead the Irish past Seton Hall in BIG EAST men's soccer action in Notre Dame, IN. The loss snapped a four-match unbeaten streak for the Pirates. The Pirates were outshot by a slim 14-13 margin and trailed in corner kicks 8-6. Martin stopped eight shots in net.
Next for Men's Soccer: Seton Hall hosts Columbia on Wednesday (Oct. 21) at 3:00 p.m. then travels to Connecticut for a 1:00 p.m.

NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: The Pirates travel to Princeton on Wednesday (Oct. 21) for a 7:30 match then on to Connecticut for a 12:30 match on Saturday (Oct. 24). Junior forward Kelly Smith was name BIG EAST Player of the Week for her two-game performance. Smith scored five goals and chipped in one assist, which gave her 100 career points in only 28 games.

The women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to intra-state rival, St. Peter's last week. The Pirates' record drops to 9-10 overall.
On Wednesday (Oct. 14), Jessica Backhus and Yvette Lozanski registered 10 kills apiece to lead St. Peter's past Seton Hall, 3-0, in Jersey City. St. Peter's took the opening game 15-6, edged Seton Hall 15-13 in the second, and secured the win with game three, 15-6. Senior Leslie Schipper (Kalamazoo, MI) led the Seton Hall attack with 10 kills and five block assists. Junior Jennifer Mumby (Chelmsford, MA) had eight block assists, setting a new personal best.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall travels to West Virginia on Saturday (Oct. 24) for a 1:00 p.m. match, then continue on to Pittsburgh on Sunday (Oct. 25) for a 2:00 p.m. match.

The men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Stonybrook on Sunday (Oct. 18). Todd Green (Oakville, Ontario) defeated Daniel Antonias at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(4). Mark Vandereslt (Hamilton, Ontario) captured the No. 3 singles over Krasimir Kolev, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
The women's tennis team picked up a win at the ECAC Women's Invitational Tennis Championships, defeating West Virginia, 6-1. The Pirates dropped their first match against Virginia, 5-1. The championship was held in Piscataway, NJ on Friday (Oct. 16).
The Pirates received a strong performance from freshman Kyli Lassalle (New Iberia, LA), who notched wins in both matches. She defeated Virginia's Kelly Weaver, 7-6(6), 1-6, 6-4 and West Virginia's Ellie Earles, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall travels will compete in the Rolex Invitational held Oct. 31-Nov. 3.

The Pirates also defeated Pittsburgh, 4-1, to improved their record to 8-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the conference. On Sunday (Oct. 18), Courtney Wood (Neptune, NJ) scored the game-winning goal at 91:09 to give Seton Hall a 3-2 upset of second-ranked Notre Dame. Wood's game-winner, her second goal of the match, was set up by sophomore Michelle Tacey (Wethersfield, CT). Notre Dame scored first, at 7:18 and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Kelly Smith (Garston Watford Herts, England) scored the equalizer for the Pirates at 52:17 when she converted a penalty kick. Smith then set up the go-ahead goal when she carried the ball down the center of the field and passed Wood on the left wing. Wood scored from 10 yards away. With the goal and assist, Smith notched her 100th career point, in just one and half seasons of play (28 games). She now has 19 goals and 44 points on the season. Senior goalkeeper Stacey Nagle (Macungie, PA) made 10 saves on the day for Seton Hall. It marked the first time Notre Dame had lost to an unranked opponent since 1990 and brought an end to the Fighting Irish's 37-game BIG EAST Conference unbeaten streak. Connecticut was the only other BIG EAST team to beat Notre Dame in conference regular season play, a 5-4 overtime win in 1995. The overtime win followed a 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh on Friday (Oct. 23). Smith scored all four goals in the match. The Pirates have a three-game winning streak.

DeBenedictis raced to a 24:16.30 finish, just one second behind second-place finisher Stephen Ondlekl of Mt. St. Mary's. William and Mary's Matthew Lane won the race with a time of 24:06.30. As a team, Seton Hall finished 13th with 358 points.
