On Wednesday, Tim James scored a season-high 31 points as 25th ranked Miami held off Seton Hall for a 77-71 BIG EAST Conference victory. Shaheen Holloway (Queens, NY/St. Patrick's) overcame back spasms to score 20 points off the bench and Gary Saunders (New York, NY/Rice) added 16 for Seton Hall (11-8, 5-5), which dropped its third in a row, all on the road. The Pirates also lost at Notre Dame and No. 1 Connecticut by a combined 18 points.
On Saturday, #17 Syracuse snapped Seton Hall's ten-game winning streak at home handing the Pirates a 76-62 loss at the Continental Airlines Arena. The Pirates were led offensively by senior Duane Jordan (New York, NY/Manhattan Center) who poured in 14 points and grabbed a game high 12 rebounds. Ramon Cespedes (Montreal, Canada/Bayonne) and Rimas Kaukenas (Vilnius, Lithuania/Prattsburg Central) also scored 11 apiece to pace Seton Hall. Syracuse went on a 10-2 run to open the game and would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest. The Orangemen defenders held the Pirates to a mere 35% from the floor, while they shot 50% on the night. From the start of the game, Seton Hall was unable to find a grove, and found itself down 43-31 at halftime.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates return to action on Tuesday, February 2, at Boston College. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. at Conte Forum.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (5-15, 2-10)
On Wednesday, despite a well-played first half and a strong finish
in the second half, the Pirates were unable to hold off the Eagles, who
held on for a 60-55 lead. Sophomore Starr Fuller (Boston, MA/J.E.
Burke) and freshman Susan Murray (North Mississauga, Ontario/Port Credit)
led the way for Seton Hall with 10 points a piece.
Boston College began the second half with a 13-2 run to go ahead of
the Pirates 40-33 with 15:59 left, after just shooting 29% from the floor
in the first half. Seton Hall put together a rally of its own pulling
the score to within one (45-44) after a Danielle Davis (Baltimore, MD/Western)
tip-in at 9:32. The Pirates came as close as to tie the game at 55
when Yolanda Rouse (Clewiston, FL/Clewiston) hit a three-point jumper with
2:11 remaining in the game. Seton Hall was unable to hold on in the
final minute as Boston College escaped with the victory.
On Sunday, West Virginia went on a 12-0 run late in the game and held
on to hand Seton Hall its sixth straight defeat, 78-70, at Walsh Gymnasium
Sunday. The Pirates led the Mountaineers, 63-57, with 5:41 remaining,
but West Virginia held Seton Hall scoreless for the next 4:13 and took
a 69-63 lead. West Virginia forwards Maria Tchobanova and Rebecca
Burbridge led all scorers with 20 points apiece. Seton Hall
was led by sophomore forwards Starr Fuller (Boston, Mass./J. E. Burke)
and Arminda Moreno (Telde, Canary Islands/Instituto J. Blune), who each
tallied 17 points.
Freshman center Susan Murray (Mississauga,
Ontario/Port Credit) contributed eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Pirates shot only 33.3 percent from the field (27-of-81) while West
Virginia was a scorching 53.8 percent from the floor (28-of-52), including
70.8 percent in the second half (17-of-24).
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates return to action on
Tuesday, Feb. 2, when they travel to Villanova University to face the Wildcats
at 7:30 p.m.
MEN'S (4-6) & WOMEN'S (7-4) SWIMMING & DIVING
The Pirates were not in action this week.

WRESTLING (4-6, 3-3 ECWA)
The Seton Hall wrestling team defeated Wagner College by the score
of 42-3 on Sunday, January 31 in dual match action in Walsh Gymnasium and
then fell to Hofstra, 28-18, in the nightcap, despite finding itself within
striking distance of the nationally-ranked squad heading into the final
match. The 42-3 win over Wagner also marks the greatest margin of victory
for the Pirates this season.
After junior Everett Bell (East Rutherford, NJ/Becton Regional)
opened the match with a forfeit win, freshman John McCarthy (Sussex, NJ/High
Point Regional) picked up his first collegiate win, a 7-1 decision over
Joe Richardson. At 125, freshman Dave Ilaria (Jersey City, NJ/St. Peter's
Prep) picked up his team-leading 17th win of the season by defeating Kam
Chang 12-8. Seton Hall then closed the match with back-to-back wins, as
freshman Larry Smashey (Franklin, NJ/Delsea) took a 3-1 decision from Kyle
Chiaverini at 157 and junior Paul Wyka (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) scored
a 10-4 win at 165. Wagner, which traveled only five wrestlers, was forced
to forfeit matches at 174, 197, 285, 133 and 141.
In the second match of the night for Seton Hall, the Pirates dropped
a 28-18 decision to Hofstra University. Bell began with a 6-0 win over
Mike Amoroso at 174 to give SHU a 3-0 lead and after Hofstra tied the match
at 3-3 with a win at 184, senior Marc Bautis (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst)
defeated Hofstra's Phil Baroni by the score of 3-2. That win, coupled with
a forfeit win for Ilaria at 125, gave Seton Hall a 12-9 lead at the halfway
point of the match. Hofstra then rallied to capture wins at 133, 141 and
149 and took a 22-12 lead with just two matches remaining. Smashey then
rallied the Pirates back into the match by pinning Hofstra's Zack Miller
in just 1:28 to draw the Pirates within four, 22-18, heading into the final
match. In the pivotal action, Dennis Papadatos of Hofstra pinned Wyka at
the 6:06 mark to account for the final points in the contest.
NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: Seton Hall returns to action on Sunday,
February 7, when they host Rider University in Walsh Gymnasium. Start time
for the match is 3:00 p.m.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK
The Seton Hall men's and women's indoor track and field teams traveled
to Boston, Massachusetts this weekend to compete at the Terrier Classic,
hosted by Boston University, and the Boston Invitational, held at the Reggie
Lewis Track on the campus of Northeastern University. The men competed
on Saturday, January 30 at the Boston Invitational, while the women raced
Sunday at the Terrier Classic. Several Pirates fared well with IC4A and
ECAC qualifying times. On the men's side, senior Ned Brooks (North
Babylon, NY/North Babylon) captured first place in the 1000m run with an
IC4A qualifying mark of 2:24.16. In the 500m, senior Derwin Jones (Port-of-Spain,
Trinidad/Woodbrook Secondary) and Brooks finished 2-3 with times of 1:04.05
and 1:04.10, respectively, which both qualify for IC4A action. Also,
the 4x400m relay team of Jones, junior James Karanja (Thika, Kenya/Kairi),
Brooks and sophomore Ken Nelson (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron Northern) ran
to a third place finish with an IC4A mark of 3:10.57.
For the women, senior Audrey Griffin (Hollis, NY/Berkshire School (MA)
took first in the with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 1:41.91, while senior
teammate Charmaine Schmidt (Washington, DC/Eastern) placed third in 1:15.46,
also good for ECACs. Senior Marissa DeFreese (Rahway, NJ/Rahway)
took first in the 1000m run with an ECAC time of 2:55.70. Sophomore Erica
Broomfield (Markham, Ontario/Milliken Hills) and freshman Nolle Graham
(Bronx, NY/William H. Taft) ran 2-3 in the 55m, clocking ECAC times of
6.95 and 7.04, respectively. Freshman Jana Burton (Queens, NY/Jamaica)
took second in the shot put with a personal best and school record toss
of 44'8", which also qualifies her for ECAC competition.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates will participate in
the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden in New York on Friday and Metropolitan
Championships in New York on Sunday.
Women's Tennis
The Seton Hall women's tennis team traveled to the Cornell Invitational
on this weekend where junior captain Laura McCracken (Greystones, Ireland)
defeated Penn State's Sara Kohn, 8-2, to take the Class A consolation singles
championship. Freshman Jasmine Wolcott (Ft. Collins, CO) was a 9-8
(5) winner over Cornell's Ngozi Amobi in the Class B consolation championship.
NEXT FOR SETON HALL: The Pirates travel to the University
of Pennsylvania Tournament on February 13-14.
