Pirate Swimmers Sweep Iona

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (January 31, 2000) - The Seton Hall University men's and women's swimming and diving squads swept Iona College on Monday night. The victory improves the men's record to 5-4, while the women improve to 4-6.

The Pirate women defeated Iona by a score of 127-86. Freshman Erin Burke (Saugus, MA) led the Pirates with victories in the 50-yard freestyle (26.26) and the 100-yard butterfly (59.78). Freshman Jessica Socha (North Brunswick, NJ) also contributed with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.14).

The Pirate men defeated Iona by a score of 112-78. Freshman Asaf Shachaf (Haifa, Israel) posted victories in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke with respective times of 47.21 and 59.57. Freshman Jon Bertera (Oakton, VA) also led the Pirates with victories in the 50-yard freestyle (22.69) and 100-yard backstroke (55.02).

The Pirates will return to action on Friday, February 4th, when they host their final home meet of the year against La Salle University. Diving is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. with swimming slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
