Settembrino Wins Seventh Straight as Wrestling Splits

Seton Hall (3-9, 2-3 ECWA) cruised past undermanned Wagner, 54-4, in the first match of the day. The Pirates received pins from sophomores Beau Bruno (Mineola, NY) at 149, Zeke Hernandez (Cliffside Park, NJ) at 165 and Carlos Panfili (Saddle Brook, NJ) at heavyweight. With only four wrestlers, the Seahawks forfeited six matches. Wagner (0-10, 0-3 ECWA) received a pair of victories from freshman Chris Ewing who recorded a 14-3 major decision over John Maiorana of Seton Hall and a 3-2 decision over Anthony Riccardi of Hofstra.
James Scanlan and Mike Eberle recorded pins at 149 and heavyweight respectively as Hofstra (5-6, 4-0 ECWA) cruised past Wagner 52-3.
In the final match of the afternoon, 12th-ranked Hofstra recorded three major decisions and a technical fall in claiming seven victories in a 26-10 win over Seton Hall. Tom Noto (22-9) and Roman Fleszar (19-9) opened the match with major decisions at 125 and 133 respectively as the Pride opened up a quick 8-0 lead.
Seton Hall received a victory at 141 pounds as senior Mike Settembrino (Lyndhurst, NJ) recorded his seventh straight win with a 2-0 upset of seventh-ranked Jason DeBruin. Settembrino remained undefeated in the ECWA as he raised his conference mark to 4-0.
Led by Eric Schmiesing's technical fall at 149 (19-4), Hofstra captured the next four matches to open up a 23-3 advantage. Dennis Papadatos also recorded a major decision (16-6) at 157.
Seton Hall added a pair of victories at 184 and 197. Junior John Garriques (Hackettstown, NJ) scored an 8-0 major decision over Ralph Everett at 184 to raise his conference record to 5-0. Senior Fikret Darzanoff (Clifton, NJ) added a narrow 3-1 decision over Matt Daddino at 197 for his third straight victory.
Seton Hall returns to action on Saturday, February 3 when it hosts Sacred Heart University in an ECWA dual meet beginning at 4 p.m.
