Bell Wins First Two Matches at NCAA Wrestling Championships

In a preliminary round match at 174 pounds, Bell pinned Ryan Hieber of Ohio State in 1:41. He then scored a 6-4 tiebreaker decision over Alan Grasso of Millersville in his first round match. Bell, who is unseeded in his weight class, will now face third-seeded Maurice Worthy of Army in his second round match. The two met on November 21 in the Pirates first dual meet of the season with Worthy recording the victory.
Two other Pirate wrestlers lost first round matches. Senior Mike Settembrino (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) lost a narrow 5-3 decision to Ralph Lopez of Fresno State at 141 pounds. He will now face Mark Rial of Northern Iowa in the consolation bracket.
Junior John Garriques (Hackettstown, NJ/Phillipsburg) also lost his first round match as he was pinned by Maryland's Jake Stock 25 seconds into the first period. Garriques will face R.D. Pursell of Arizona State in the consolation bracket.
