Sylvia Jaros Wins Flight B Singles Title at Quinnipiac Invitational

Junior Sylvia Jaros won the Flight B singles title and reached the finals of the Flight B doubles tournament.

HAMDEN, Conn. – Seton Hall junior Sylvia Jaros (Scarborough, Ontario) over the weekend led the Seton Hall tennis team in its first competition of the fall , the Quinnipiac Invitational, winning the Flight B singles title and finishing in second place in the Flight B doubles tournament. In doubles competition, Jaros competed with Connecticut’s Alison Koch; the two lost in the finals to Rutgers’ team of Jill Markowitz and Anela Dujsic, 8-5.

Jaros, who was playing in her first tournament as a Pirate, after transferring from Hawaii, defeated five players to win the Flight B singles crown, topping Markowitz in the final, 6-2, 7-5.

In the Flight A singles bracket, senior Viviana Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) was Seton Hall’s top finisher, reaching the semi-finals. Figueroa topped Maryland Baltimore County’s Ale Pedergnana in the opening round, 6-2, 6-1, and Bucknell’s Ronnie Brown, 6-3, 6-0, in the quarterfinals, before falling to the eventual Flight A champion, Massachusetts’ Michelle Speiss, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Amanda El-Tobgy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also competed in the Flight A tournament, but she fell in the first round to Stony Brook’s Anne Cathrine Valle, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Other Pirates in singles action were freshman Danielle Viola (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), who lost to top seed, Markowitz, in the first round of the Flight B bracket, 6-1, 6-1, and junior Iva Gyurgina (Radomir, Bulgaria) was in the Flight C singles tournament, winning her opening round match with Quinnipiac’s Amanda Petruzzi, 6-1, 6-2, but was defeated by top seed Jana Bartoloni of Massachusetts in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles competition, the team of Figueroa and Gyurgina was upset in the opening round of the Flight A bracket, falling to Bucknell’s Brown and Paulina Gamboa, 8-6. Viola and El-Tobgy also lost in the first round of the Flight A doubles, losing to the top-seed of Massachusetts’ Dorothy Iwanowicz and Susan Johnson, 8-3.

The Pirates will return to action this Friday, Sept. 30, for their first dual match of the fall, when they play host to Fordham.
