Women's Tennis Beats Fordham, 4-3

Freshman Danielle Viola was victorious in both singles and doubles competition on Friday.

BRONX, N.Y. – The Seton Hall women's tennis team on Friday won its first dual match of the fall season, defeating the Fordham Rams, 4-3. Junior Sylvia Jaros (Scarborough, Ontario), freshman Danielle Viola (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) and junior Jennifer Seide (Hyde Park, Mass.) each won their single’s matches, with the Pirates also earning the doubles point. Seton Hall’s match record now stands at 1-0, while Fordham falls to 1-2.

Both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches were very competitive, with Seton Hall winning them both. In the first match, the Pirates’ Viviana Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Iva Gyurgina (Radomir, Bulgaria) topped Dominique Liguori and Ellenoira Featherston, 8-6.

The tightest of the three doubles contests was the No. 2 slot meeting between Seton Hall’s Jaros and Amanda El-Tobgy (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and Fordham’s Doina Sandor and Danielle Spigner. Jaros and El-Tobgy prevailed in the marathon match, winning, 9-8 (8-6). Seton Hall completed the doubles sweep, when Seide and sophomore Nadja Sein (Tallinn, Estonia) took the third match, topping Christina Papa and Lisa Vulin, 8-2.

In singles competition, Jaros defeated Featherston, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 3 match. In No. 5 singles, Viola bested Vulin, 6-3, 6-1, and Seide beat Spignor, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 6 slot competition.

The Seton Hall tennis team’s next action comes in two weeks, when it will travel to Columbia for a dual match on Friday, Oct. 14.
