Women's Tennis Sweeps Long Island

Sophomore Amanda El-Tobgy defeated Merve Koksal in No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-3 (10-6).

BRONX, N.Y. – The Seton Hall women’s tennis team earned a sweep over Long Island at the Stadium Tennis Center on Friday. The win was the team’s second of the spring, and the Pirates now hold a 3-4 dual-match record. The match with the Blackbirds was the first for Seton Hall since Sunday, Feb. 5, after a snowstorm forced the team to cancel two matches last weekend.

In singles action, senior Viviana Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) won the No. 1 match over Jessica Loose, 6-1, 6-4. Two other Pirates cruised to victories; freshman Danielle Viola (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) beat Amy Hosotsuji, 6-1, 6-0, in No. 5 singles, and junior Iva Gyurgina (Radomir, Bulgaria) won her No. 6 match against Claudia Arteaga, 6-1, 6-0.

Long Island managed to push two matches to a third set, but fell short in both instances. Junior Sylvia Jaros (Scarborough, Ontario) won the No. 3 singles match over Krystina Bachner, 2-6, 6-2, 10-4, and sophomore Amanda El-Tobgy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) defeated Ashley Harvey, 6-2, 6-4, in No. 4 singles. Sophomore Nadja Sein (Tallinn, Estonia) was Seton Hall’s other singles victor, winning her No. 4 match over Ashley Harvey, 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles play, Figueroa and Sein defeated Koksal and Bachner in the No. 1 match, 8-2, Viola and Gyurgina teamed to beat Loose and Hosotsuji in No. 2 doubles, 8-4, and junior Veronika Gerka (Edmonton, Alberta) teamed with Jaros to take the No. 3 slot, 8-3, beating Harvey and Arteaga.

The Seton Hall women’s tennis team returns to action this Friday, Feb. 24, when it faces Manhattan in Queens, N.Y., at 7:30 p.m.
