Women's Tennis Loses Home Opener to Rutgers, 6-1

Sophomore Nadja Sein won in both singles and doubles action against Rutgers on Saturday.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women’s tennis team dropped its home opener to BIG EAST rival Rutgers, 6-1, at the Meadowlands Courts on Saturday. Sophomore Nadja Sein (Tallinn, Estonia) shined for the Pirates, winning the team’s only singles point and also nabbing a victory in doubles play. With the loss, Seton Hall now stands at 7-7 overall, 1-2 in the BIG EAST, while Rutgers improves to 9-5 overall, 4-2 in the conference.

Sein defeated the Scarlet Knights’ Ketevan Shmakova in straight sets in the No. 3 singles match, 6-2, 6-0. Sein also partnered with senior Viviana Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) to win the No. 1 doubles contest over Alina Balasa and Dana Gordon, 8-5.

Figueroa and junior Sylvia Jaros (Scarborough, Ontario) were the only Pirates to take their singles matches to three sets. Figueroa fell to Katrina Elder-Bush in the No. 1 match, 7-5, 1-6, 6-5, and Jaros lost the No. 2 match to Gordon, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.

Seton Hall returns to action this Tuesday, Mar. 28, when it hosts Connecticut for a 2:30 p.m. BIG EAST match at the Meadowlands Courts.
