Women's Tennis Cruises Past Connecticut, 6-1

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women’s tennis team beat BIG EAST foe Connecticut, 6-1, on Tuesday at the Meadowlands Courts, snapping a two-match losing streak. The win evened the Pirates’ BIG EAST record at 2-2, and improved the team to 8-7 overall. With the loss, Connecticut falls to 4-9 overall, 1-2 in conference matches.

In singles action, Seton Hall won five of the six matches, but three of those wins were decided in a third set. Juniors Iva Gyurgina (Radomir, Bulgaria) and Ebru Burduroglu (Istanbul, Turkey) were the two Pirates to win in straight sets. Gyurgina topped BreAnn Cheung, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) in No. 5 singles, and Burduroglu won the No. 6 match over Ashley Petruzzi, 6-4, 6-1.

Also winning for Seton Hall was senior Viviana Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), besting Jaclyn Shapiro in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, sophomore Nadja Sein (Tallinn, Estonia), winning her No. 3 match with Jessica Porter, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, and freshman Danielle Viola (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), who outlasted Elizabeth Dibbs in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

SHU’s doubles lineup featured a couple of changes, but the Pirates adapted and swept the point. Gyurgina and sophomore Amanda El-Tobgy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) matched up for the first time this year, winning the No. 2 match over Shapiro and Porter, 8-4, and Viola and Jaros partnered for just the second time all year, taking the No. 3 match against Alison Koch and Dibbs, 8-3.

Seton Hall returns to action this Friday, Mar. 31, when it will face DePaul in Milwaukee, Wis., at 4:00 p.m.
