Women's Tennis Loses 5-2 At Marquette

Junior Ebru Burduroglu won her No. 6 singles match on Saturday.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Seton Hall women’s tennis team lost to Marquette, 5-2, at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium on Saturday. The loss is the Pirates second in as many days. Junior Ebru Burduroglu (Istanbul, Turkey) was the only singles winner for SHU, with the team also taking the match’s doubles point. The loss drops Seton Hall to 8-9 overall, 2-4 in the BIG EAST. Marquette improves to 8-11, 2-1 in BIG EAST play.

Burduroglu came from behind to win her No. 6 match over Robin Metzler, earning the three-set victory, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (1). In doubles play, the Pirates secured the point by winning both the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. Senior Viviana Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Nadja Sein (Tallinn, Estonia) took down Maria Calbeto and Lauren Little in the No. 1 slot, 9-7. Junior Iva Gyurgina (Radomir, Bulgaria) and sophomore Amanda El-Tobgy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) cruised to the win in the No. 2 match over Francina Bonnelly and Erin Watkins, 8-2.

Freshman Danielle Viola (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) was the only Pirate besides Burduroglu to not be swept in singles action. Viola lost to Dominika Dabrowski, 0-6, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 4 singles.

Seton Hall returns to action this Friday, Apr. 7, when it hosts West Virginia at the Meadowlands Courts in South Orange, N.J., in a 1:00 p.m. match.
