Women's Tennis Loses 4-3 Heartbreaker to West Virginia

Senior Viviana Figueroa was victorious in No. 1 singles on Friday.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women’s tennis team fell to the West Virginia Mountaineers 4-3 in BIG EAST action on Friday. The match, which began at 11:00 a.m., was interrupted because of heavy rain, forcing the contest to resume at the Center Court Tennis Club in Chatham, N.J., at 6:00 p.m. The tight loss drops the Pirates’ overall record to 8-10 this year, 2-5 in the BIG EAST, while West Virginia improves to 6-10 overall, 4-3 in conference play.

Seton Hall was swept in doubles play, but all three matches were very competitive. Senior Viviana Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Nadja Sein (Tallinn, Estonia) dropped the No. 1 flight doubles match, 8-6. Junior Iva Gyurgina (Radomir, Bulgaria) and sophomore Amanda El-Tobgy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also fell 8-6, losing in No. 2 doubles.

Freshman Danielle Viola (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) and junior Ebru Burduroglu (Istanbul, Turkey) nearly earned a doubles win, but lost to Colleen Speaker and Ashley Constantine in flight three, 9-7.

The doubles sweep meant the Pirates needed four of the six singles matches in order to pull out the win, but SHU mustered only three wins. Figueroa topped Natalia Prinz in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), Viola beat Kelly Walsh in flight four singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Burduroglu won her flight six singles match with Speaker, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Seton Hall will return to action this Saturday, Apr. 8, when it hosts Syracuse at 6:00 p.m., at the Center Court Tennis Club in Chatham, N.J.
