Syracuse Tops Women's Tennis, 5-2 - Seton Hall University Athletics

Junior Ebru Burduroglu earned Seton Hall's only singles victory on Saturday.

CHATHAM, N.J. – The Seton Hall women’s tennis team fell to Syracuse, 5-2, at the Center Court Tennis Club on Saturday. The loss was the Pirates’ second over the weekend and fourth in a row. The Orange competed with only five athletes, forfeiting flight three doubles and flight six singles. The loss drops Seton Hall to 8-11 overall, 2-6 in the BIG EAST. Syracuse is now 13-5 overall, 5-1 in BIG EAST matches.

Heavy rain on Saturday forced the match to be moved indoors to the Center Court Tennis Club in Chatham instead of the Pirates' home courts at Meadowland Park in South Orange.

Junior Ebru Burduroglu (Istanbul, Turkey) was Seton Hall’s lone victor on Saturday. Burduroglu defeated Carolina Huignard in No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Danielle Viola (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) was the only Pirate to force third set in singles action, but Viola fell to Ashley Lipton in No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-7 (9-7), 10-6.

With the Orange forfeiting the No. 3 doubles match, SHU needed only one doubles win to take the point, but dropped two tight contests. Senior Viviana Figueroa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Nadja Sein (Tallinn, Estonia) nearly took flight one doubles, but lost to Victoria Vaynberg and Catherine Zawadski, 8-6.

Seton Hall’s next action will be this Wednesday, Apr. 12, when it travels to Villanova, Pa., to take on Villanova at 3:00 p.m., at the Villanova Tennis Complex.
