
Tennis Plays Opening Rounds at USTA Invitational

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Seton Hall tennis team had a tough day at the 2009 USTA Women’s Collegiate Invitational at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center. The Pirates failed to win a match in a main draw or consolation bracket.
Sophomore Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) lost her first round match in the “C” Flight Singles to Yilia Smimova from Binghamton (6-3, 6-3). In the consolations, Verow dropped a match to Juljia Korshunova from FDU (6-2, 6-3).
In the “D” flight singles main draw, junior Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) fell to Carling Donovan of Columbia in three-sets (6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (7)). Sunbul also lost in the consolation rounds to Linn Sjogren of LIU (6-0, 6-0).
Freshman Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) was beaten in the first round of the “E” flight singles bracket by Brown’s Julie Flanzer (6-0, 6-1). Cordero moved to the consolations where she was downed by Jackie Mabatah of BC (6-1, 6-2).
Moving to the “F” flight singles draw, sophomore Michelle Weerasinghe (Edina, Minn.) was topped by Chelsea Davis of Columbia (6-2, 6-1). In the consolation bracket, Weerasinghe was defeated by Chloe Smith of NC State (6-3, 7-5).
In “B” flight doubles the duo of Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) and Verow came up short against Buffalo’s Tamara Markovic and Adi Petrova, 8-2. The pair of Denise Liebschner (Weinboehla, Germany) and Sunbul were on the wrong side of an, 8-3, decision to NC State’s Tana Illova and Chloe Smith.
Both doubles teams will compete in consolation rounds on Sunday at the USTA Women’s Collegiate Invitational.
