Where Are They Now?
By Dave Popkin
I figured the Pirate faithful might be interested knowing what happened to some of your favorite players from seasons past, so here goes. Below is a far-from-exhaustive list of what some former Pirates are up to:
Grant Billmeier - After playing pro basketball for a season in Germany, Grant is now an assistant basketball coach for the #1 ranked high school team in the country, his alma mater St. Patrick's (Elizabeth). He is looking to break into college coaching in the future.
Donald Copeland - "The Donald" joined me on our halftime radio show last night. He is playing professionally in Bosnia for Bosna ASA BH Telecom in the Adriatic League. Through seven games, Copeland is averaging 10.1 points, 3.7 assists, and 2.7 rebounds in 29 minutes.
Samuel Dalembert - Playing his eighth season with the Philadelphia 76ers, averaging 6.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2 blocks per game in 24 minutes of action.
Adrian Griffin - Assistant Coach - Milwaukee Bucks. Played nine years in the NBA. Recently elected to the Seton Hall Athletic Hall of Fame and will be inducted on Feb. 4.
Mark Bryant - Assistant Coach - Oklahoma City Thunder.
Paul Gause - Paul is pursuing a football career. He was released by the Las Vegas Locomotives of the new UFL after being drafted by them in 2009.
J.R. Morris - Playing for Regionalliga in Germany.
Darius Lane - Playing for Central Entrerriano in Argentina and averaging 14.2 points per game and shooting 48% from the field.
Shaheen Holloway - Assistant coach at Iona College where the Gaels have an (8-5) record thus far.
Luther Wright - Part-time assistant basketball coach at Globe Technical Institute in New York City and freelance disc jockey, including a recent appearance at Pirate's Cove at Prudential Center.
Andre Barrett - Played last season for Regal RC Barcelona and was on the pre-season roster for Cleveland Cavaliers this year. Has played for six different NBA teams.
Danny Hurley - Head Coach at St. Benedict's, ranked 5th in the nation by Maxpreps.com. In early 2009, Hurley won his 200th career game.
Terry Dehere - Jersey City Board of Education member, real estate developer, and owner of Sanai's restaurant in Jersey City.
Andrew Gaze - A media personality in his native Australia, who appears in commercials and announces NBL basketball games. Andrew also appears in series five of Dancing with the Stars in Australia!
Greg Tynes - Head Coach of the West Side Roughriders High School Basketball team in Newark.
Rimas Kaukenas - Playing for Real Madrid in Spain. He is averaging 9.6 points, 1.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1 steal per game.
Brian Laing - Started the 2009 season with the Reno Bighorns of the NBDL, but is not currently on the roster.
Glenn Mosely - Works for Prudential Center in Newark.
John Morton - Assistant Coach for St. Peter's College. The Peacocks are (6-6) so far this year and gave the Pirates a scare in the season opener.
Dan Calandrillo - Head Coach of the Holy Cross School. He has yet to cut a player (which is evident from the 27 uniforms needed this season) and plays every kid.
Jerry Walker - President of Team Walker, a non-profit academic and recreational program for inner-city children in Jersey City. President of DGX, a security and IT systems company based in New Jersey.
Arturas Karnisovas - Director of Global Scouting & International Affairs for the Houston Rockets. Karnisovas oversees all of the Rocket's international scouting operations. Before the Rockets, Arturas spent four and a half years working in the international basketball operations department for the NBA.
John Allen - Playing for the New York Phantoms of Braunschweig, Germany.
Jamar Nutter - Played in Uruguay last year for the Bakken Bears averaging 9 points per game.
