HAMDEN, Conn. - The Seton Hall tennis team opened up its fall season at the Quinnipiac Invitational. Two rounds of doubles play was completed at the three-day event, which will be completed tomorrow in addition to the beginning of singles play. Each of the Pirates pairs picked up wins in either the main draw or consolation brackets of the first day.
The Pirates top duo of sophomores Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) and Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) won its first round match in the "A" bracket against Christen Cadigan and Brooke Hoover of URI, 8-6. In the second round, the pair suffered a tough, 9-7, loss to UConn's Kelley LoRusso and Abby McKeon.
In the same bracket, sophomore Michelle Weerasinghe (Edina, Minn.) and freshman Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) were also victorious in the first round topping Kristen Liu and Paulina Rys of Fairfield, 8-4. Like SHU's other duo, the pair was knocked out after another close, 9-8 (5), defeat by the hands of URI's Kirsten and Tristany Leikem.
Junior Slavina Kaplonska (Sofia, Bulgaria) and senior Alexandra Harvey (Chatham, N.J.) were defeated in the first round of the "B" bracket, 8-4, against Fairfield's Gretchen Amberg and Michaela Cerrone. In the consolation round, the pair won, 8-6, against Quinnipiac's Carly Loewenstein and Ali Warshavsky.
Also in the "B" hub, junior Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) and senior Liza Chu (Panama City, Panama) dropped its opening match to Kari Pope and Maria Casaletto from Army, 8-3. Sunbul and Chu did bounce back with an 8-6 victory over Fairfield's Alyssa Ruiz and Nicolette Jackson in a consolation match.
