
Tennis Opens Up Play at West Point Invitational

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Seton Hall tennis team began a three-day tournament West Point Eastern Tennis Invitational. The Pirates have two players in contention for consolation draw championships.
In the first doubles main draw the duo of Liza Chu (Panama City, Panama) and Michelle Weerasinghe (Edina, Minn.) fell in the first round to Stony Brook's Nini Lagvilava and Anna Pieschl, 8-2. The pair also lost its consolation bracket match to Abby McKeon and Katie Mortiz of UConn, 8-5.
Sophomore Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) came up short the first round of #1 singles play to Victoria Aiello of Middlebury (6-1, 6-2). Verow will play Colgate's Samantha Inacker in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
The pair of Alexandra Harvey (Chatham, N.J.) and Slavina Kaplonska (Sofia, Bulgaria) advanced to the round of 16 after a Binghamton forfeit, but lost to Julie Allen and Sarah Griffin of UConn, 8-3.
Junior Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) earned a first round victory in the #2 singles draw over Connecticut's Emily Herb (2-6, 6-4, 10-6). In the second round, Sunbul was shut down by CC Sardinha of Syracuse (6-0, 6-0).
Freshman Karina Codero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) won her opening round match in #3 singles against Jessica Asselin of Siena (4-6, 6-1, 10-1). In the round of 16, she fell to Kaitlyn Carpenter of UMass in straight sets (6-1, 6-2).
In #4 singles, sophomore Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) came up short against Prerana Appineni of Stony Brook (6-3, 6-0). Kilarski bounced back in the consolations to top Nicole Ross, 8-0, and will face Army's Kari Pope in the quarterfinals of that draw.
Competition will resume on Saturday, September 26.
