TEANECK, N.J. – The Seton Hall tennis team was in action Tuesday afternoon, falling to Fairleigh Dickinson in a close 4-3 affair.
The two teams split the points from singles matches with FDU capturing the narrow victory by earning the point for doubles matches.
“We faced a team with strong doubles players today,” said Head coach Greg Wyzykowski.”There were positive takeaways from our play today. It was encouraging to see our lineup compete well from top to bottom. Our freshmen have made consistent contributions and as they continue to improve along with our returning players, we are capable of having a strong spring season.”
In #1 singles, sophomore Pui Wing Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) fell to USTA Invitational A flight singles champion Anna Rapoport 2-6, 3-6.
Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) dropped her #2 singles match 1-6, 3-6 to Julia Prantl.
In their second match in ten days, FDU’s Irinia Dementyeva downed senior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) 6-3, 6-1 in #3 singles. Verow had previously defeated Dementyeva 7-6 (5), 6-0.
The Pirates rebounded to take three singles points of their own. Junior Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) outlasted FDU junior Egzona Morina in their #4 singles matchup, winning 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
Freshman Maria Del Rosario Rodriguez (Bogotá, Colombia) also used three sets to take a #5 singles win against Manuela Leme 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.
In #6 singles, Anna Guryanova (Moscow, Russia) won a battle of freshmen, sweeping Gabriela Sarrate 6-0, 6-1.
Despite their singles success, the Pirates were unable to breakthrough in doubles play. Sher and Portela were bested by Rapoport and Elmine Botes 4-8.
Verow and freshman Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) fell to Prantl/Morina 2-8.
FDU’s team of Dementyeva/Leme squeaked by the Seton Hall team of Cordero/Rodriguez 8-5 to secure the victory.
Several Pirates return to action this weekend at the ITA Regional Tournament for the conclusion of the fall season. Matches are scheduled to begin on Friday at 8 a.m. from the campus of Yale University.
