SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall tennis team prepares to send five entries to the 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament in New Haven, Conn.
Pui Wing Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) has been selected for a spot in the main draw singles bracket for the second consecutive year. Last season, Sher defeated Lili Johnson from Manhattan 6-0, 6-1 in her opening match before falling to #14 seed Stefanie Nunic from Boston University in the following round.
Sophomore Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) will open in qualifying round singles play for the second straight season. In 2010, she dropped her qualifying match to Nakita Austin of St. John's 1-6, 2-6.
Senior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) will also play qualifying round singles after previously being listed as an alternate.
Sher and Portela will team in main draw doubles, hoping to improve upon last year's performance. The two advanced past the first round, downing Ferhatbegovic/Leme of FDU 8-4 before being ousted by the third-seeded team of Holly Cao and Samatha Rosekrans from Harvard 0-8.
Verow will pair with freshman Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) as SHU's second entry in the doubles main draw field. Playing with Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.), Verow fell short in her only doubles match at this tournament last year, dropping a 5-8 decision to the St. Peter's team of Kristen Chen and Linnea Enoch-Janssen.
Play at the ITA Regionals is scheduled to begin on Friday at 8 a.m. Matches will be held at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on the campus of Yale University.
