WINTER PARK, Fla. - Efficiency was the word of the day as the Seton Hall tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip with a 6-1 dismantling of Colgate University, picking up the squad's second win in three days.
The Pirates (5-8) have now won five of their last seven matches.
With sophomore Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) out of the singles lineup, each team member played up one spot from their regular slot.
Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) stepped in for her classmate in the top spot, but dropped her match with Alex Petrini by a 3-6, 1-6 score.
All other Pirates in singles action dispatched their opponents in straight sets.
Senior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) eased past Colgate sophomore Kelsey Shea, 6-2, 6-1. For Verow, it was her fourth win in six matches playing in the number two slot this season.
Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) downed Colgate captain Stephanie Brown, 6-3, 7-5, picking up her third straight win when competing in #3 singles.
Freshman Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) moved past Meredith Rock, 6-2, 6-0 in #4 singles. Shoemaker won her final two matches of the three-game swing, dropping only two total games in the process.
Newcomer Maria Rodriguez (Bogota, Colombia) secured her fourth consecutive win, ousting Becky Silvers, 6-0, 6-1 from the number five slot. With the victory, Rodriguez tied Sher for the team lead with 13 individual victories to this point in the season.
Anna Guryanova (Moscow, Russia) also increased her personal winning-streak to four, taking her #6 singles match with Colgate junior Jackie Finn 6-2, 6-0.
After failing to earn the doubles point in Wednesday's narrow defeat to #73 Fordham, SHU bounced back to win all three doubles match on Thursday.
Sher teamed with Portela to defeat Colgate's top team of Brown/Petrini, 8-4. The two second-year players have not lost when playing together since a February 18 match at Navy, posting a 7-0 record in that span.
Shoemaker and Verow combined to overpower the pair of Rock/Shea, 8-1, in #2 doubles.
Guryanova and Rodriguez completed the sweep with an 8-2 triumph over Silvers and Finn in the number three slot.
The Pirates will return home and receive a respite before hosting Connecticut on Friday, March 23 in the first of two consecutive BIG EAST home matches. First-serve is slated for 1:00 p.m.
