Wednesday's wake-up call in the Canary Islands saw the Pirates set to begin their journey home to South Orange, NJ. It would be a long travel day for the entire travel group. The group boarded a 10:55 AM plane from Gran Canaria back to Madrid. Once in Madrid, the group had a short two-hour layover before boarding an eight-hour flight home to JFK Airport.
While everyone enjoyed the trip to Spain, all are excited to return home.
In addition to the Pirates' four exhibition games, the players, coaches, staff and Pirate Blue members got to experience the amazing scenery, culture and people of Spain.
While in the Canary Islands, the entire travel group enjoyed the resort pool and activities. On the one full off day, the group took a five-hour catamaran boat ride on the Atlantic Ocean. While some of the players were a bit hesitant at first, they quickly changed their minds and began enjoying the water sport activities included on the trip. Everyone took part in parasailing, snorkeling, and rides on the banana boat. Junior Brian Oliver arranged a ride with his teammates and told the operator to be sure to drive fast enough so they all got wet!
Like the boat trip, the entire Spain tour served as a great bonding experience for the players, coaches and staff. A sense of family was felt by all as Pirate Blue members enjoyed all the same activities together with the team.
While it is great to be heading back home, the experience for all on the trip has provided many special memories that will never be forgotten.
