SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall will celebrate "Nick Werkman Day," on Sunday, Jan. 13 when the men's basketball team hosts Providence at noon at the Prudential Center.
Nick "The Quick" Werkman was one of the most prolific scorers ever to play college basketball and scored 2,273 points in only three seasons at Seton Hall. He graduated as the Pirates' all-time leading scorer. Werkman averaged a jaw-dropping 32.0 points per game throughout his collegiate career and twice earned All-America status.
The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative Nick Werkman rally towel. In the Pirates Cove Kid's Zone there will be arts and crafts opportunities that pay tribute to the Seton Hall great. Additionally, throughout the game, there will be facts and trivia pertaining to Werkman.
Of course, don't miss a special presentation to the Pirates' all-time great, during the game.
A dominant rebounder despite being just 6-foot-3, Werkman is one of only four Pirates to record over 1,000 career rebounds, averaging an astonishing 14.6 rebounds per game throughout his career. In one of the greatest single-seasons in Seton Hall history, he averaged 33.0 points and 17.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 1962-63.
The 1964 Haggerty Award recipient, no one has recorded more career field goals made and attempted or free-throws made and attempted in Pirates' history. At the time of his graduation, Werkman held at least a share of 25 individual Seton Hall records. He is a member of the Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame and is one of only eight men's basketball players to have had his number retired.
Prior to landing in South Orange, Werkman won All-State honors at Trenton Catholic High School and his team to the New Jersey Parochial Catholic title in 1960.
