MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The 2013-14 season opener proved to be a fruitful one for the Seton Hall men's swimming & diving team as The Hall eased past Montclair State, 153-116, to start the new year with a win.
Seven different Pirates contributed individual victories as Seton Hall (1-0) finished back-to-back in the top-two positions in nine-of-14 swimming events and had 10 swimmers earn an opportunity to swim at the 2014 BIG EAST Championships in the process.
Sophomore Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) led the way with automatic qualifying times in two events. Bosse first qualified for the 50-free with a second-place time of 22.51 that trailed only fellow upstate New York product Keith Carlino (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) who finished first with an AQ mark of 22.28.
Bosse and Carlino who swap places as part of an all-Pirate top-three in the 200-back that included freshman Xavier Jimenez (Cincinnati, Ohio). Bosse posted his second qualifying time of the night in the win.
Jimenez registered his own AQ time while leading a dominant SHU performance in the 100-back. Jimenez reached the wall first with a time of 55.82, outpacing seniors Matt Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) and Evan Forbes (Cinnaminson, N.J.) who also qualified for the BIG EAST meet during the event while finishing second and third respectively.
Junior James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.) delivered perhaps the most commanding performance of the night in the 200-breast, clocking a time of 2:14.45 that was nearly 10 seconds faster than his nearest competitor and almost six seconds under the BIG EAST standard.
Fellow junior Zach DeLillo (Sinking Spring, Pa.) also added his name to the list of qualifiers in a victory, leading one of five 1-2-3 finishes for the men's squad on the night with a 2:02.59 performance in the 200-fly.
Sophomore Andrew William (Bayonne, N.J.) placed second behind DeLillo in the event and went on to close the night by posting the quickest 200-IM time (2:03.61) of the meet, securing the chance to compete at a second-straight conference championship.
Senior Ian DeLisio (Woodstock, N.Y.) was one of seven team members to double up by registering a win and recording an AQ time in the process. He did so in the 100-breast after finishing in 1:03.32.
The lone remaining qualifier from meet number one was freshman Cooper Lindsley (Lancaster, Pa.) who got the job done in a second-place showing in the 200-free (1:47.71). In all, Lindsley recorded three top-three finishes on the night while classmates Zach Suter (Aurora, Colo.) and Seth Underwood (Collegeville, Pa.) each collected two; highlighted by Suter's first-place effort in the 100-free.
Rounding out the group of Pirates who collected the top time in their event was senior Greg Black (Easton Pa.), whose 100-fly time of 55.18 stood as the fastest of the night.
Seton Hall also enjoyed success in the two relay events that were held as Benson, DeLillo, Logan and Jack Poupore (Scottsdale, Ariz.) teamed to place first in the 200-medley while Logan combined with Bosse, Carlino and Colin Machat (Easthampton, Mass.) to claim victory in the 400-free relay.
Over at The Hall, junior standout Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) took his first shot at taking down his own school records from both diving boards. In his first competitive appearance since placing 16th at last year's NCAA Zone A Championships, Mitchell turned in a six-dive score of 272.02 from the three-meter board.
SHU will look to stay in the win column when they make their next appearance on Thursday, October 17 as the Pirates welcome Rider to South Orange. The meet marks the tams' only home appearance of the fall and is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
