NEW YORK, N.Y. - Coming off a stellar junior campaign in which he netted All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention and First Team All-Metropolitan selections, Seton Hall senior swingman Fuquan Edwin (Paterson, N.J.) was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team it was announced on Wednesday morning at the conference's basketball media day held in Manhattan at Chelsea Piers.
In 2012-13, Edwin emerged as an all-around force for The Hall; leading the Pirates and ranking seventh in a 15-team BIG EAST by pouring in 16.6 points per game in the regular season. In a 14-point, nine rebound effort at St. John's, he became the 40th player in school history to record 1,000 career points and just the 23rd to do so in less than three full seasons. He finished the season with 1,213 points to his credit, just over 200 shy of cracking the top-20 on Seton Hall's all-time scoring list.
Always a noted slasher with an ability to finish at the rim, Edwin continued to expand his offensive arsenal in his third year, helping SHU finish first in the league in three-pointers made. He knocked down 63 treys overall and his .412 shooting percentage from beyond the arc was not only the fourth-highest mark in the conference, but the fourth-best single-season percentage in school history. A symbol of his development, Edwin improved his long-range shooting percentage by nearly a full 10 percent from that of his freshman season despite doubling his attempts.
One year after becoming the first BIG EAST player ever to lead the nation in steals per game, the Paterson native supplemented his augmented offensive game by continuing to display a proclivity for the pilfer. Edwin registered a Seton Hall record 102 steals as a sophomore to lead all Division I players with a 3.0 per night average and followed up by finishing second in the league with 79 more as a junior. He enters his final season with 218 steals in his career, the fourth-highest total in program history; trailing associate head coach Shaheen Holloway (231), Paul Gause (256) and well within striking distance of the all-time mark of 260 set by Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Famer Dan Callandrillo from 1979-82.
Joining Edwin on the Second Team are two other seniors in Cleveland Melvin of DePaul and Marquette's Jamil Wilson, St. John's sophomore JaKarr Sampson and the Villanova duo of Ryan Arcidiacono and JayVaughn Pinkston.
An extra spot was added on the Second Team due to a tie in voting.
Creighton's Doug McDermott was tabbed as the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year in the Bluejays' first year in the conference while the Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team was comprised of Semaj Christon (Xavier), Bryce Cotton (Providence), Davante Gardner (Marquette), D'Angelo Harrison (St. John's) and Markel Starks (Georgetown).
St. John's newcomer Rysheed Jordan took home Preseason Rookie of the Year honors.
Marquette, who finished 14-4 in league play last season received five first-place votes to earn the distinction of being the top team in the preseason coaches' poll, followed by Georgetown in second as the Hoyas, who are also coming off a 14-4 performance within the conference captured two first-place votes.
The Pirates were picked to finish eighth by the coaches in this, the first year of a new-look BIG EAST. You can view the full poll and list of award winners HERE
