
Gibbs Earns Second Straight BIG EAST Weekly Award

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sterling Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday marking the second straight week the Pirates' red-shirt sophomore point guard earned the conference accolade. Gibbs averaged 16.5 points, 2.5 assists and shot 17-18 (.944) at the free-throw line in Seton Hall's 1-1 week.
The Pirates now have collected four weekly awards in five weeks this season. Seton Hall senior guard Fuquan Edwin (Paterson, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Nov. 18 and freshman guard Jaren Sina (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) was selected Rookie of the Week on Nov. 25.
Gibbs started the week with a 16 point performance where he shot 8-for-9 (.889) from the free-throw line to help lift Seton Hall to its third straight win in a 71-55 victory over NJIT. Then on Saturday, Gibbs posted double-digits in the scoring column for the fourth straight game and eighth time this season against Saint Peter's. He finished with 17 points and three assists before leaving the contest due to injury with 10 seconds remaining. Gibbs shot a perfect 9-for-9 from the line and went 4-7 (.571) from the field.
The 6-2 guard from Scotch Plains, N.J. leads the Pirates and ranks 10th in the BIG EAST with 16.1 points per game. His 4.0 assists per game is the eighth highest average in the conference, and he is currently fifth overall in free-throw shooting (.848).
Butler guard Kellen Dunham was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week and DePaul's Billy Garrett earned Rookie of the Week honors. Gibbs was joined on the Honor Roll by Cleveland Melvin (DePaul), Davante Gardner (Marquette), Darrun Hillard (Villanova) and Justin Martin (Xavier).
Seton Hall returns to action Sunday at the Prudential Center when the Pirates host Eastern Washington at 5 p.m. The contest will air on FOX Sports 1 and 970 AM (WNYM).
