Seton Hall (1-5) swept the doubles matches, finishing the weekend unbeaten in doubles play and jumping out to an early 1-0 lead for the second consecutive match.
Juniors Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) continued to display the form that helped them climb to the top of SHU's all-time doubles wins list last season, dominating Navy's team of Emani Decquir and Sam Droop, 8-1, capturing their sixth win in the last seven matches from the #1 position.
Senior captain Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) and Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) doubled up Logan Antill and Darien Sears, 8-4, at #2 to clinch the doubles point followed by an 8-6 victory from the freshmen duo of Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) and Alex Landert (Naples, Fla.) over Cassandra Fisbeck and Stefanie Ton in their debut as a team this season.
The Midshipmen claimed wins in the first three singles matches to be decided, building a 3-1 match lead with straight-set wins at #2, #3 and #6.
Sher pulled a point back for The Hall when she closed out Decquir 6-1 in the deciding set, capturing her fourth win in her last six appearances by a final score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Sher is the team leader in combined wins with 14 and also has a team-best five victories in dual match competition, all from the top singles position.
Enduring her second three-set match in as many days, Shoemaker staved off defeat both in her #4 singles match and in team competition, evening the score at 3-3 after rebounding from a first set loss to take the next two from Ton. Following a 3-6 defeat in the opener, Shoemaker drew level after outlasting the Navy senior in a second set tiebreak, 7-6 (5). The third set was also a nip-and-tuck affair, as Shoemaker again emerged victorious from a tiebreak, 7-6 (3).
It was the second time that Shoemaker has defeated Ton in three sets in 2012-13. In the Pirates original trip to Annapolis for the Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational in the fall, she also rebounded from a first set loss to take the next two to advance to the C flight semifinals. Shoemaker now ranks second on the team with 12 combined wins in 2012-13 and has won in three sets in three of her last four appearances.
Following Shoemaker's comeback victory, the team match was left to be decided from the #5 slot.
Cordero took the first set from Navy's Katie Porter, 6-3, but Porter, who is undefeated on the season, rallied to take the next two to give the match to the home team by the slightest of margins.
The Pirates will be back in action this Friday when they host local foe Saint Peter's in Newark, N.J. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
