2/28/2013 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis
Senior Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) is in her fourth season competing for the Seton Hall tennis team, bringing a wealth of experience to her position as team captain in 2012-13.
The native Venezuelan has been a reliable and consistent force for SHU over the course of her career, totaling over 25 singles victories and establishing herself as a force in doubles competition by finding success with a number of different partners on the court.
Cordero began her final collegiate campaign by advancing to the semifinals in both singles and doubles at the Quinnipiac Invitational in the fall, followed by a quarterfinal appearance at the Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational in Annapolis, Md. She was also instrumental in the Pirates’ success last weekend during a return trip to Annapolis, combining with Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) to post a pair of doubles victories from the #2 position.
Last year, Cordero became the first Pirate to take home two titles from the QU Invite, emerging victorious from the C flight singles bracket and teaming with then-senior Courtney Kilarski to take home the B flight doubles crown. She went on to record pivotal singles wins in team victories over Manhattan, Saint Peter’s, Colgate and conference foe Providence, helping the Pirates qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time in five years.
As a sophomore, she completed the year tied for second on the squad in individual victories while recording double-digit doubles victories for the second-straight year after collecting 10 as a freshman.
Cordero is the subject of the first installment of the new SHUPirates.com entitled web series Riddle Rally.
As a part of the series each member of the tennis team was asked to fill out a basic personality questionnaire. Every week, a new Pirate will be featured as two teammates compete in a rally-scoring, tennis-style game to see who knows them best.
The tennis team will return to the court on Saturday, March 2 when they travel to Fairfield to take on the Stags. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
