BLACKSBURG, VA. - Seton Hall sophomore diver Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) wrapped up his two-day trip to the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon, advancing to the finals of the men's three-meter competition.
In preliminary action, Mitchell outscored 28 divers representing 10 different conferences, scoring a 295.85 to rank 14th out of 42 competitors and earn a second trip to the board in the final. He went on to receive a final tally of 258.7 in his last dive set of the day, finishing in 18th place overall with a two-round total of 554.55.
Mitchell's performance on Saturday was the third-best among five divers from current BIG EAST institutions. Claiming a spot in the finals at the NCAA meet is just another notch in what has been a banner year for the sophomore, who also reached the finals of the three-meter competition at the conference championship two weeks ago.
The Milford native finished seventh for The Hall in Indianapolis after becoming the first SHU diver to reach an 'A' final at the BIG EAST meet. He also recorded 10 first-place finishes and was a runner-up five times during the 2012-13 regular season, and will enter his junior year as the school record holder from both the one and three-meter boards.
On Friday, Mitchell placed 26th in the one-meter competition, an event won by Logan Shinholser of Virginia Tech. In the three-meter competition, Shinholser placed first (829.70) for the second consecutive day, and will be joined by teammate Ryan Hawkins at the NCAA Championships after Hawkins finished in second with a score of 785.55.
