SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Seton Hall tennis team returned to the court for the first time in 15 days on Saturday, opening the BIG EAST portion of its dual match schedule with a 7-0 defeat at Syracuse.
The loss snapped a two-match winning streak for the Pirates as they fell to 3-8 overall during the spring season.
Juniors Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) suffered their first loss in their last six appearances and just their second during spring dual match competition, falling 8-2 to Maddie Kobelt and Brittany Lashway at #1 doubles.
Sophomore Anna Guryanova (Moscow, Russia) and freshman Alex Landert (Naples, Fla.) had a run over two consecutive wins in the third doubles position broken as SU’s team of Aleah Marrow and Jimena Wu came out on top, 8-4, in the tightest doubles match of the day.
Playing together for the first time since February 15, freshman Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) and sophomore Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) were topped at #2, 8-1, by Amanda Rodgers and Komal Safdar.
In singles competition, the Pirates were missing two-thirds of the top of their typical lineup and struggled to score in the absence of Landert and Portela.
From the top spot, Sher took the first set, 7-5, from Rodgers but went on to drop the second, 4-6. Rodgers eventually emerged as the victor after taking the tiebreak, 10-6. The Orange took the other five singles matches in straight sets as Shoemaker, Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) and Maria Rodriguez (Bogota, Colombia) all saw their individual two-match winning streaks come to an end.
Keenan also returned to the singles lineup for the first time since mid-February, coming up short in her first-ever appearance in the #2 slot.
The Pirates will be right back in action tomorrow, Sunday March 24 in a neutral site conference matchup with Providence College. The Pirates have not lost to the Friars under head coach Greg Wyzykowski and will be looking to get back in the win column when the match begins at 10:00 a.m. from Syracuse.
