TAMPA, FLA. – Faced with an opening day match against the third-seeded Louisville Cardinals, the #69 team in the country, the Seton Hall tennis team fell, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon during the first round of the 2013 BIG EAST Championship at the USF Varsity Courts.
Despite the loss, the Pirates, seeded #14, will remain in Tampa and begin play in the consolation portion of the bracket on Friday.
The match began with Louisville claiming the first two doubles matches to be completed, putting SHU in an early hole.
As singles began, UofL’s Rebecca Bodine picked up the first individual point of the match from the #6 position with a 6-1, 6-0 win over SHU senior Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela).
After dropping the first set at #5, sophomore Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) traded blows with Louisville senior Mandy Brown but Brown eventually escaped by a narrow 7-6 margin in the second to take the point.
In the #2 slot, junior Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) was matched up against Rebecca Shine, the fourth-ranked player in the Ohio Valley region according to the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional rankings. Shine took the match in straight sets, clinching the team victory for the Cardinals.
Junior Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) (#1), and freshmen Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) (#3) and Alex Landert (Naples, Fla.) (#4) were also in action in singles when the match was called to a stop.
The Pirates will face #11 St. John's, tomorrow, Friday, April 18 in the first round of consolation play after St. John's dropped a 4-2 decision to sixth-seeded Rutgers earlier today. SHU and STJ met five days ago in what was the regular season finale for each squad, and the Red Storm left South Orange with a 5-2 win.
