EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Seton Hall University celebrated its 156th baccalaureate commencement on Monday, May 20, at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J., and 39 SHU student-athletes walked across the stage as members of the Class of 2013.
The diverse group included 22 female and 17 male student-athletes, representing 13 different states as well as three foreign nations.
The baseball team boasted the most members of this year's graduating class with nine student-athletes receiving their diplomas. The women’s soccer and volleyball teams each featured five graduates, the women's swimming and diving squads had four, men’s cross country, men’s swimming & diving and women’s basketball boasted three graduates apiece, softball and women’s cross country both had two representatives while men’s basketball, men’s soccer and women’s tennis each graduated their only eligible senior.
The ceremony culminated a decorated academic year for the Seton Hall University Department of Athletics as this group of Pirates garnered a number of individual and team academic accolades during their time in South Orange.
Graduating on Monday were the Pirates' pair of BIG EAST Scholar Athlete of the Year nominees in baseball's Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) and Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) of softball. Hammer was also named the Seton Hall Senior Female Scholar Athlete of the Year while the Senior Male Scholar Athlete of the Year went to another member of the baseball team, Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.).
Additionally, Hammer received CoSIDA Capital One First-Team Academic All-District II honors, just one of several scholastic honors collected by the Pirates this year. Women's basketball senior, Alexandra Maseko (Harare, Zimbabwe), was selected as a Rhodes Scholarship finalist in her native nation, the women's soccer squad earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team All-Academic accolades and both the men's and women's swimming & diving teams earned College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America distinction for the 13th consecutive year. Also continuing the tradition of academic prowess was the SHU tennis program, who received the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Team All-Academic Award for the fifth straight year.
Earlier this month, 15 seniors were inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society and a total of 28 student-athletes in the Class of 2013 earned at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, receiving Seton Hall’s Merit Scholar Award.
With spring 2013 grades yet to be finalized, six members of the graduating class were Magna Cum Laude and 10 received Cum Laude honors.
Together, the class of 2013 has accumulated nearly 80 BIG EAST Academic All-Star Awards, with more to come this summer, and leave SHU at the head of a student-athlete population that collectively holds the highest cumulative grade-point average in school history.
